An offline AI chatbot runs a downloaded model on your device instead of sending each question to a hosted service. Once the necessary files are in place, you can keep chatting without an internet connection.
The catch? A desktop app isn’t automatically offline. The model and connected tools determine what stays on your computer.
These apps illustrate different workflows—not a tested ranking.
Think of it as two pieces: the app you chat through and the model that generates replies. Our local LLM guide explains how those pieces fit together.
For offline chat, both need to work on your device. An installed app connected to a cloud model still needs the internet. Some apps offer both options, so check the selected model rather than assuming everything is local.
Document workflows need another check: the model that prepares files for search may be separate from the model answering your questions. In AnythingLLM Desktop, prepare the local document-processing model as well as the chat model before disconnecting.
Web search, remote tools, and new downloads still need a connection—even when basic chat works offline.
Use these listings to check platforms, access options, and limitations. Start with LM Studio for model browsing and chat, Jan for local and optional cloud connections, or AnythingLLM Desktop for document-focused work.
Before committing to a setup, check:
Hardware: can your computer handle the selected model? Our guide to choosing local AI models explains what to consider.
Downloads: have you prepared every model and runtime the workflow needs?
Costs and licensing: are there separate provider charges, and does the model allow your intended use?
Connections: do document processing, search, or other tools send requests elsewhere?
LM Studio’s offline documentation and Jan’s quickstart guide explain their local-use options.
A local conversation doesn’t prove that every optional feature stays on-device. Check the configuration before adding sensitive material.
Pick one app, finish its downloads, and select a local model. Then disconnect and try rewriting a paragraph, brainstorming ideas, or asking about a non-sensitive document.
Notice what keeps working and what asks for a connection. That’s a useful first check of your setup—not a complete privacy audit.
