AI companion apps are built around returning to conversations, rather than starting a new fictional scene each time.
Kindroid, Nomi and Replika are three options to explore. Start with how much you want to define the companion yourself, what information you want carried forward, and which controls let you update it.
If you have a particular personality or background in mind, look at how you can describe it and revise it later. Kindroid provides backstory and key-memory fields, while Nomi’s Backstory+ lets you supply context about the companion, yourself and your shared setting.
If you prefer to review what has been recorded, Replika’s Memory section lets you inspect saved details and add, update or remove memories.
These controls help you manage context; they do not establish perfect recall. Saved chat history, information you enter yourself and details retrieved during a conversation are different things.
Open the listings for documented features, access options and limitations.
All three services require users to be at least 18; Replika also requires the age of majority where you live if that is higher.
Before sharing sensitive details, check the provider’s policies on data use, retention and deletion. Removing a saved memory, deleting a conversation and closing an account may have different effects. Check which personalization and conversation features require a subscription, too.
Treat these as AI conversation tools—not therapy or a promise of emotional support.
Start with a few non-sensitive preferences and see whether you can correct or update them comfortably. Choose an app whose conversation style and controls suit you, rather than relying on a broad memory promise.
