Developers who want an agent with explicit planning, reviewable changes and configurable local or hosted model access.

Why consider it

The official repository documents terminal command execution, multi-file edits, local Ollama/LM Studio models and a programmatic SDK.

Main limitations

The native desktop app is verified for macOS and Windows; Windows is beta. Other CLI or editor routes may cover more systems, but Linux is not mapped solely from generic cross-platform assumptions. Auto-approval increases risk. Local inference depends on model selection; MCP and cloud tools can still send data externally.

Cost and access

Core code is Apache 2.0 and can be used without a software subscription. Optional ClinePass subscription and Cline Provider pay-as-you-go access are documented; external provider charges remain separate.

Getting started

Install the official desktop app, editor extension or CLI. Configure your model provider, start in Plan mode and review file changes and shell commands before approval.
